Books and Beer

Hello Lovely Readers!

5006b240-fd92-11e3-9611-bc764e059db1_bigBooks and Beer is coming to Duel Brewery in Santa Fe and ABQ. It will consist of a book exchange (bring three, take three), an Open Mic (sign up at 6) and a couple of features.

I have the wonderful opportunity to do a 15 minute performance at the premier of this show June 7 & 8th.

So, friendos, what shall I read?

My most recent work can be found on this site (although whether or not it is a “performance piece” is debatable), and of course most of you know my older performance pieces.

Since I haven’t had a feature since last summer, I would love to make this a good one. Help me out. Comment below at what piece(s) you think would be the best for this show.

And please come and support the new venue.

SANTA FE & ALBUQUERQUE, NM – May 23, 2016 – The New Mexico Foundation for Literary Arts and Duel Brewing are teaming up to present BOOKS & BEER, a weekly free book exchange and spoken word performance, to be held at the artisan Belgian-style brewery’s taprooms in both Albuquerque and Santa Fe. The BOOKS & BEER events will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Duel Brewing, on Tuesdays in Santa Fe, and Wednesdays in Albuquerque. The first two events will take place June 7 (Santa Fe) and June 8 (ABQ), 2016. Guests may bring up to three gently used books, and will be allowed to take home as many books as they donate, free of charge.

Each week, BOOKS & BEER will feature a dynamic published writer as the headline act, for a spoken word performance of 15 to 20 minutes, followed by an open mic, limited to 15 guests allotted 5 minutes each. The featured writer for June 7 and 8 will be accomplished Santa Fe ambient poet Cari Griffo, with special guest writer and editor Katrina K Guarascio. Those interested in performing during the open mic segment will be given space on a first-come, first-serve basis, with signups starting at 6 p.m. on site.

Each week, BOOKS & BEER will be emceed by one winner of NMFLA’s ongoing #burquebookbabe social media “read hot” campaign, which asks New Mexico readers to post sexy pictures of themselves reading their favorite books, with the hashtags #burquebookbabe and #readhot. Mr. Heavyweight New Mexico and Mr. Albuquerque Greg Tyler Ewan, a local gym owner, personal trainer, model and actor who loves to read and describes himself as “sapiosexual,” will emcee the June 7 and 8 events.

Though BOOKS & BEER is free, guests are asked to give a minimum $10 tax-deductible donation to the nonprofit New Mexico Foundation for Literary Arts, whose mission is to raise awareness of reading and books in Central New Mexico. They are also, of course, asked to partake of the venue’s Belgian-style beers and food.

“New Mexico ranks dead last in the nation for literacy,” says NMFLA Executive Director Alisa Valdes. “Part of our foundation’s mission is to raise awareness of books and reading by making these things fun and social, and part of the community’s entertainment landscape. Santa Fe and Albuquerque are both filled with incredibly creative writers and brewers, and when Cari and I started talking we realized how much fun it could be to bring the book community and the beer community together each week to have a great time. It’s going to be amazing! Duel has already shown its support for the arts by being the in-house brewery for Meow Wolf in Santa Fe, and now they’re stepping up to help promote literacy work. We here at NMFLA are so grateful to the support of Duel Brewing, and we can’t wait to meet all the beer-loving readers and writers in our area.”
